After returning to South Africa from a former life in London, Cape Island was started in 2015 by creative visionary, Suzanne Snowdowne and logistical guru, Karin Wood. Together they head up a team of talented women and devoted mothers working to create a legacy. The women are a formidable business team as well as friends, balancing out each others’ strengths with grace, kindness and a healthy dose of humor. Their mission? Spread a little more light in the world, one luxury candle at a time.
TELLING THE STORY OF AFRICA THROUGH FRAGRANCE
The team are committed to telling the story of Africa through fragrances in the form of candles, soap products, lotions and diffusers. Each element of the piece is carefully considered – from the fragrance notes, to the colors, to the packaging. Each item is designed to connect you to the natural landscape and the many cultures and emotions woven into it.
Take, for example, the Black Gold collection, which honors Africa’s natural wealth. Black Gold imbues the decadence of an ancient aristocracy in the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, where the famed golden rhino was discovered in 1932. A mysterious people from history, imagined as guardians of an abundant kingdom, are daring you to be bold and unapologetically decadent.
The Clifton Beach collection celebrates the natural beauty of the Southern African Cape coastline. The sweet and captivating notes of coconut & vanilla are expertly layered with tolu balsam and lime. The coconut note has energizing and uplifting effects on both the mind and the body, easing anxiety and tension. The Clifton Beach fragrance is a holiday in itself, which will leave you dreaming of palm trees, white sandy beaches and the fresh Atlantic Ocean mist.
ECO-LUXE: SOCIALLY & ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
As an environmentally and socially responsible company, Cape Island recognizes that simply telling these stories is not enough. The mission is to be a force for positive change and to be socially and environmentally conscious. There is a strong focus on high quality, natural ingredients, micro batch production and re-usable packaging. The Cape Island soaps and lotions are aquatic friendly and sulphate free. Candles are hand-poured and fragrance oils are sourced from leading perfumers in Europe.
GIVING BACK TO THE LAND THAT INSPIRED IT ALL
Cape Island’s mission is to be a force for positive change in their immediate community and the wider continent of by finding ways to give back to the original muse, Africa. All products are designed and made in Africa. Plus as part of their Giving Back initiative, Cape Island has committed to supporting a selection of non-profit organizations with the hope of spreading a little more light.
EACH CAPE ISLAND FRAGRANCE SUPPORTS A NON-PROFIT
Each of the five Cape Island fragrance collections support a non-profit that speaks to the unique tribute carried by each fragrance. The non-profit will receive regular donations based on sales of the popular 250ml classic candles.

A tribute to the conservation of Africa’s endangered wildlife
This is the largest rhino sanctuary in the world. Their mission is to rescue abandoned, injured, and orphaned rhinos and to rehabilitate them wherever possible.

A tribute to the women of Africa and their courageous spirit
Hope Risen works to end human trafficking and bring restoration to survivors through awareness and prevention initiatives. Their work is carried out alongside direct interventions to rescue, restore and reintegrate victims of trafficking.
Peace Parks Foundation: Supported by Safari Days
A tribute to the natural beauty of the African Bushveld
A transnational conservation initiative founded by Nelson Mandela, HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and Dr Anton Rupert. The organization strives to preserve large natural ecosystems that transcend man-made boundaries.

A tribute to the natural beauty of the Cape Coastline
Clean-C is a community based beach cleanup initiative whose aim is to keep the Cape coastline clean. They also create jobs through their recycling initiative.

An organization aimed at addressing the educational and social needs of rural children in South Africa and offering them lifelong learning in order to build positive self-worth and self-respect.
