  • Kirsten Goss: FINE JEWELRY THAT FUSES CULTURES

SCANDI MINIMALSIM MEETS BOLD AFRICAN DESIGN

Kirsten Goss was born to create. Growing up in Durban, her formative years were heavily influenced by a fusion of her mother’s Scandinavian background (Kirsten and her mom pictured below) and her uniquely African childhood. Today Goss’s jewelry reflects this international upbringing and her collections combine vibrant, exuberant colors and bold, minimalist forms.

IT ALL STARTED WITH A MACARONI NECKLACE

Kirsten Goss made her first piece of jewelry aged about five - a painted macaroni necklace – and that set the wheels in motion for her award-winning career. After studying Jewelry Design at Stellenbosch University, she was full of ambition to work for an international design company. She travelled to London where she designed for leading fashion jewelry house Erickson Beamon.

In 2002, she broke away and started her own label in the UK, opening her first store in London in 2005. It was during this time in London that Kirsten really cut her businesses teeth, learning as she went and taking on everything herself - from making jewelry to marketing and bookkeeping. With the business expanding, she returned to South Africa and opened more stores in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.  In 2019 the brand celebrated their sixteenth birthday in style and Kirsten took time to reflect on how far the business has come and what lies ahead.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OBJECT IN SOUTH AFRICA

Over the years, Kirsten Goss has won an impressive number of international awards including being featured as one of the UK Professional Jeweller Hot 100 jewelers of the year in 2013. In 2012, she won the award for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, at the Design Indaba for her exquisite Lily Pad ring, pictured below. The ring features two contrasting layers with a green amethyst beautifully nestled within its folds.

    COMBINING DESIGN WITH TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW

The brand’s aesthetic is playful, distinctive and instantly recognizable – you are in stylish company if you own a piece of Kirsten Goss jewelry. Her necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings are worn by fashionistas and celebritieslike Sarah Jessica Parker and Rosamund Pike. She even designed pieces for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

    KEEPING A MASTERFUL SKILL ALIVE

Goss herself hand draws the items she creates and the pieces are brought to life by a talented team of goldsmiths, jewelers and beadworkers. Every item is produced at her state-of-the-art studio in Durban and Kirsten sees this as the foundation of her brand. Rather than outsourcing the goldsmithing work, she oversees it directly to assure quality control. Every piece is finished by hand with a meticulous attention to detail. In an industry dominated by mass production, Goss is proud to keep this masterful skill alive.
