IN PURSUIT OF A GOOD LIFE

With the motivation to pursue something more personal than a nine-to-five, Johannesburg-based Zydia Botes started the Smtng Good Studio in 2018. She founded her collaborative textile design studio with a strong artistic vision. Her idea was to work with artists and designers who communicate strong positive messages via their work. The aim was to make a gentle, positive impact in the lives of clients and collaborators, and in the process leave the world a better place.

MADE BY REAL PEOPLE, FOR REAL PEOPLE

All Smtng Good blankets, throws and wraps are small, limited edition batches, ethically made in South Africa using locally sourced, sustainable materials. The products are knitted in a local textile factory using cotton sourced from BCI accredited farms.

The female team laugh and sing as they add their handmade touches to the pieces, and they take genuine pride in what they do. Zydia firmly believes that the people behind the brand is what makes it great.

CREATIVE COLLABORATIONS WITH FEMALE ARTISTS

The Smtng Good blankets, throws and wraps are designed by some of her Zydia’s favorite female artists, and they all have a story to tell. For example, the Americanah blanket is designed by Mariana Lancastre and takes its inspiration from the novel of the same name by writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Mariana says: “I was caught by the story of this woman that "becomes a black woman" when she moves from Nigeria to America. Her natural hair is a powerful symbol to address racism, loneliness and home and I wanted to pick this idea, by transforming an African pattern into a hectic urban landscape."

Another stand-out item from the Smtng Good collection is the Love Run throw. This throw with a hand knotted fringe was designed by South African artist Renée Roussouw. The lines on the artwork represent running tracks and were inspired by Renée's love for running.

WRAPS THAT WILL ADD AN ELEMENT OF ART TO YOUR WARDROBE

In addition to home décor textiles, Smtng Good has also created a line of fashion throws, in collaboration with designer Carla Pinto. The throws are carefully crafted to counteract fast fashion and instead add a timeless element of art to your wardrobe. These generously sized 100% cotton jacquard knits can be worn or used as a lap blanket – it’s a win-win situation.
