      • Walter Battiss (1906-1982) was a South African artist known for his pioneering role in the abstract art movement in South Africa. He was also a writer, poet, and teacher. Battiss is particularly renowned for his exploration and promotion of a unique style known as “Fook Island,” which he created as a Fictional island inhabited by imagined tribes and creatures. His work often blended elements of surrealism and abstraction with influences from African art and culture. Battiss’ contributions to South African art were significant, and he remains a celebrated figure in the country’s artistic history. His work often featured vibrant colours, bold forms, and elements of fantasy and mythology. Battiss was deeply interested in the spiritual and mystical aspects of art, and his paintings often reflected these themes. In addition to his artistic practice, Battiss was a teacher and art critic, contributing significantly to the discourse on art in South Africa during his lifetime. His legacy continues to influence South African art, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections both locally and internationally.
